Well, there are two basic rumors about why he didn't die:
1) Because he is the owner of all deathly hallows (elder wand, invisibility cloak, reservation stone). According to the legend, whoever had all three of them, would master death.
2) Because the wand couldn't kill his own owner.
They both seem to be reliable, although I think that Rowling did this on purpose, in order that we try to guess why.
